a true witness sermon

SERMON TEXT: John 3:22-30

SUBJECT: true testimony
THEME: John’s Joy and His Disciples’ Jealousy
Our text divides into four sections: (1) Jesus baptizes, too (vss. 22-24); (2) John’s disciples are jealous (vss. 25-26); (3) John’s joy (vss. 27-30); and (4) the superiority of the Savior (vss. 31-36).
INSIGHTS:
We have heard this theme before. John 1:8: He is not the light. John 1:20: He is not the Christ. John 1:21: He is not Elijah and not the prophet. John 1:23: He is just a voice crying in the wilderness. John 1:27: He is not worthy to unstrap Jesus’ sandals.
In 4:2 we are told that Jesus was not baptizing, but his disciples. That reference would seem to cover this incident as well, and so the disciples of John are just reporting what they have heard, or think they heard.)
The real point at issue is the authority of Jesus to “overturn” the system of ritual purification within Judaism. John replies to this question of the authority of Jesus in vss. 27-36. In vss. 27-30 he reassures his disciples, reminding them that if more people are coming to Jesus, it does not threaten him at all, because “heaven” has ordained it to be so. After all, some of these very disciples of John had heard him tell the Jewish delegation that he was not the Messiah but was sent before him.
INTRODUCTION:

John’s disciples return to him frustrated and upset, not with the Jew, but with Jesus. They are distressed that Jesus and His disciples are more successful than they are. In fact, they almost seem distressed at John the Baptist, irritated that he has not done anything to remedy this situation. After all, it was John who pointed the crowds to Jesus, and he who had greatly contributed to the success of Jesus. Listen to the anger and frustration in their words to their “master”:

THESIS: What character John the Baptist portrays in witnessing for Christ?

PROPOSITION:
1. HUMILITY-v.30 Jesus must become preeminent, while John must fade from the picture. The “must” of verse 30 is crucial. John is showing deep humility, it is true, but he is also saying that this is the way it “must” be, the way it will be—because this is the plan and the purpose of the sovereign God. Verses 31-36 spell out some of the ways in which Jesus is superior to John.

2. FAITHFULNESS- not a fanatics or loyal to anyone else. He please only the Lord and not men.

3. TRUTH –John knew that Jesus came from heaven as the Son of God, while he was a sinful, mortal man, who could only speak about the more plain subjects of religion. The words of Jesus were the words of God; he had the Spirit, not by measure, as the prophets, but in all fullness. Everlasting life could only be had by faith in Him, and might be thus obtained;

4. SERVANTHOOD- In verse 27, he takes his disciples back to the basics of what his ministry is all about, and reminds them about their ministry as well. ECCL.12:13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

John’s ministry is the ministry he received from God. His God-given ministry was not to be the Messiah, but to introduce the Messiah. He was the forerunner; Jesus was the fulfillment, the grand finale. John illustrates what he is saying by using the analogy of marriage. Jesus is the “bridegroom”; John is the “friend of the bridegroom.” The “friend of the bridegroom” is not distressed when the “bridegroom” appears at the wedding celebration to take his bride—he is elated. The friend’s task is to bring the bride and the groom together. When the voice of the groom is heard, the friend of the groom knows his task is accomplished, and he can rejoice in fulfilling his mission. He can rejoice that the bride and the groom are joined in marriage.

CONCLUSION:

CHALLENGE:
So, we must ask ourselves again, who are we? And, for whom do we witness?
I hope and pray each one of us is a good witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Syzygus in Action

church membership class

Becoming a Syzygus in Christ Church Member

At SCC we believe membership in a local church is important. We also feel the process in which a person becomes a member of a church is equally important.

The Qualifications of Membership

1. A personal commitment of faith in Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
2. Scriptural baptism, since becoming a believer, as a testimony of salvation.
3. Completion of the church’s membership class – "Discovering Church Membership."
4. A signed commitment of agreement with and willingness to abide by the church membership Covenant.
5. Public affirmation before the other members of the church family.

Discovering Church Membership Class
The first step is to participate in the "Discovering Church Membership" Class. Offered several times throughout the year, this class has six sessions geared to helping you decide if SCC should become your church home. Although a requirement for membership, this class is designed solely to give people the opportunity to get to know us without any obligation or unsolicited follow-up.

What it Means to be a Church Member

The difference between "attendees" and "members" can be summed up in one word: commitment.
At SCC we recognize the need for a formal membership. We ask people to commit to membership for four reasons:
1. A Biblical Reason: Christ is Committed to the Church
"...Christ loved the church, and he gave his life for it." Eph. 5:25
If we want to follow Christ we should also be committed to the church.
2. A Cultural Reason: It is an Antidote to our Society
We live in an age where very few want to be committed to anything...a job...a marriage...our country. This attitude has even produced a generation of "church shoppers and hoppers." Membership swims against the current of America's "consumer religion" and encourages people to become contributors. It is an unselfish decision that demonstrates our love for others. Commitment always builds character.
3. A Practical Reason: It Defines Who Can Be Counted On
Every team must have a roster. Every school must have an enrollment. Every business has a payroll. Every army has an enlistment. Even our country takes a census and requires voter registration. Membership identifies our family.
4. A Personal Reason: It Produces Spiritual Growth
The New Testament places a major emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual growth. You are more likely to be unaccountable when you're not committed to any specific church family. Living outside of accountability is a dangerous place to be.

The Bottom Line: Membership Involves a Partnership

What is SYZYGUS in CHRIST CHURCH's Part?

Our commitment to those who become members of SCC is that they and their families will be shepherded by the Elders and Staff.

1. We will embrace you as a member of our family. (I John 4:7-8)
2. We will equip you to mature spiritually. (Ephesians 4:11-16)
3. We will encourage you to stay on course in your relationship with God and care for you when you encounter trials and uncertainties. (Hebrews 10:23-25; Acts 2:42-47)
4. We will enrich your life by keeping you on a mission that has value and significance and invites God's presence into your life on a daily basis. (John 10:10; I Corinthians 1:4-9)

Definition of Shepherding

We believe and teach that the Scriptures are clear on the definition of shepherding the flock. We use words such as "lead," "feed," "heed," "guide," "discipline," "support" and "protect" as we summarize passages such as Acts 20, I Timothy 3, Titus 1, Ephesians 4, and I Peter 5. But we have to ask ourselves, "What does this mean for us at SCC?" We would like to suggest the following statements as criteria for measuring whether we have indeed "shepherded" the flock at SCC.

A person at SCC is considered "shepherded" when: (note - all these statements imply the inclusion of all family members.)

1. You have an opportunity to hear the clear Gospel, profess Christ as Savior, and be baptized publicly.
2. You have an opportunity to attend a Membership Discovery Class where our doctrine and philosophy of ministry are explained clearly, your questions are answered openly and with sensitivity, and you have had the opportunity to join the church.
3. You have the opportunity to engage in corporate worship with the Body at least weekly.
4. You are receiving a steady diet of Biblical teaching, both on Sunday morning and at other studies during the week.
5. You have access to personal discipleship, whether one-on-one or in a small or large group.
6. You have access to counsel and equipping concerning your spiritual gifts and callings, with opportunity for training in practical ministry skills.
7. You have the opportunity, once equipped, to engage in some sort of meaningful ministry.
8. You have regular access to information concerning the direction of the church, leadership decisions, and specific information concerning various church ministries.
9. You have access to the church leadership team for the purpose of registering questions, complaints, concerns, and suggestions.
10. You are prayed for regularly and have the opportunity to be involved in corporate prayer on a regular basis for others.
11. You have access to counsel and guidance concerning the major areas of your life: your walk with God, your marriage, family, job, finances, and other major decisions.
12. You have access to the leadership in times of great grief or needs such as funerals, weddings, etc.
13. You have opportunity to have regular supportive fellowship in a small group context and are held accountable for it.
14. You are checked on regularly for information regarding needs and concerns and are able to regularly share them with a member of the leadership team.
15. You are protected from defection from the faith by regular exposure of false doctrine through teaching and by being held accountable for your daily walk with Christ.
16. You are held accountable, admonished, confronted and even disciplined, if necessary, for your sake and for the sake of the Body.

What is Your Part?

At SCC we never ask our members to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. We only expect our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the Membership Covenant.
We don't want something from you; we want something for you.
Having accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and having been baptized since becoming a believer, and being in agreement with SCC's statements, strategy, and structure, I now feel led by the Holy Spirit to unite with the SCC family and be shepherded. In doing so, I commit myself to God and the other members to do the following:

Exalting The Supremacy Of Christ

1. To pursue personal spiritual growth through time alone with the Lord in Bible study and prayer. (Philippians 2:12-13-/II Peter 3:18)
2. To participate in the weekly worship service(s) on a regular basis. (Hebrews 10:24-25/Acts 2:42)
3. To contribute financially to the church in a consistent manner as God enables. (I Corinthians 16:2, II Corinthians 9:7)

Experiencing Christ Through One Another

1. To join the family life of the church in a small-group context. (Acts 2:43-47)
2. To submit myself to the leadership of the Elders in matters of church policy, doctrine and discipline. (Hebrews 13:17/I Thessalonians 5:12-13)

Engaging In The Work Of Christ

1. To exhibit the servanthood of Jesus Christ by serving in the body according to my spiritual gifts(s) and God-given passion. (Romans 12:6/I Peter 4:10)
2. To support one or more of our commended missionaries by giving to, praying for, and communicating with them. (Philippians 4:13-16/III John 5-8)

Extending The Hope Of Christ

1. To share my faith personally. (Acts 1:8/II Corinthians 5:20a/II Timothy 4:5)
2. To support one or more of our commended missionaries by giving to, praying for, and communicating with them. (Philippians 4:13-16/III John 5-8)

The name of this church shall be
_Syzygus in Christ Church_

It shall be affiliated with the
Luzon Convention of Southern Baptist Churches

BUSINESS LOCATION

The address of the principal office of this church shall be
___________________________________
Address of the Church
PURPOSE
The purposes of the Syzygus in Christ Church are:
1. To worship God, and to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ as set forth in Matthew 28:18-20.
2. To minister to the needs of the members and others as the church is able to do so.
3. To do any and all things related to, and in connection with, the carrying out of the object and purpose as set forth above.
ARTICLES OF FAITH
We believe the Holy Bible to be the inspired Word of God (1Cor. 2:7-14; 2Pet. 1:20, 21), without any error and the all-sufficient authority in matters of faith, doctrine, and Christian living.

2. We believe in one God, (Deut. 6:4; Is. 45:5-7; 1Cor. 8:4) eternally existing in three Persons: the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 28:19; 2Cor. 13:14)

3. We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, (Matt. 1:18-23) and that He is truly God and Man (Col. 2:9). He died on the cross for our sins (John 10:15; Rom. 3:24, 25; 5:8 1Pet. 2:24). He rose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father and He is now our Highest Priest and Advocate (Matt. 28:6; Luke 24:38, 39; Acts 2:30, 31; Romans 4:25; 1John 2:1).

4. We believe that man was created in the image of God (Gen. 2:7; James 3:9) but fell into sin and is therefore lost, separated from God, and only through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit can man’s salvation and spiritual life be obtained (Gen. 2:16, 17; 3:1-9; John 3; 36; Rom. 3:23; Eph. 2:1-3).

5. We believe that eternal salvation is a free gift of God, entirely apart from man’s works, and is possessed by any and all who have faith in, and received Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. We believe that salvation is wholly of God by grace on the basis of the redemption of Jesus Christ, the merit of His shed blood, and not on the basis of the human merit and works (John 1:12 1 Pet.1:18, 19).
ORDER OF SALVATION
Election
We believe that the election is the act of God by which, before the foundation of the world, He chose in Christ those, whom He graciously regenerates, saves and sanctifies (Rom. 8:28-30; Eph. 1:4-11; Thess. 2:13).

Regeneration
We believe that regeneration is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit which the divine nature and divine life are given (John 3:3-8; Titus 3:5). It is instantaneous and is accomplish solely by the power of the Holy Spirit through the instrumentality of the Word of God (John 5:24), when the repentant sinners, as enabled by the Holy Spirit, responds in faith to the divine provision of salvation.

Justification
We believe that justification before God is an act of God (Rom. 8:30, 33) by which He declares righteous those who, through faith in Christ, repent of their sins (Luke 13:3) and confess Him as sovereign Lord (Rom. 10:9; Phil. 2:11).

Sanctification
We believe that every believer is sanctified (set apart) unto God by justification and is therefore declared to be holy and is therefore identified as a saint. This sanctification is positional and instantaneous and should not be confused with progressive sanctification. This sanctification has to do with the believer’s standing, not his present work or condition (Acts 20:32; 1Cor. 1:2, 30; 6”11; Thess. 2:13)

Security
We believe that all the redeemed once saved are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever (John 5:24; Rom. 5:9, 10).

Separation
We believe that separation from sin is clearly called for throughout the Old and New Testaments, and that the Scriptures clearly indicate that in the last days apostasy and worldliness shall increase (2Tim. 3:1-5).

We believe that out of deep gratitude for the undeserved grace of God granted to us and because our glorious God is worthy of our total consecration, all the saved should live in a manner as to demonstrate our adoring love to God and so as not to bring reproach upon our Lord and Savior (1John 2:15-17; 2John 9-11).

Glorification
We believe that glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed (Revelation 3:20; 21:1).

6. We believe in a regenerated church membership: that is, persons old enough to understand their need for a Savior and have their own will accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and are baptized by immersion.

7. We believe that there are two ordinances to be observed by the church in this present age, baptism by immersion (Matt. 3:13-17), and the Lord’s Supper (Matt. 26:26-30) as a memorial to His suffering and death on the cross for our sins. They are, however, not to be regarded as means for man’s salvation.

8. We believe in the personal, bodily, imminent and glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 16: 27) and that His Second Coming inspires the believers for dynamic and zealous life and service for Him while waiting for His return.

9. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; the everlasting blessedness of the saved in heaven, and the everlasting punishment and separation from God of the unsaved in hell (Matt. 19:28-20; Phil. 3:17-21).

10. We believe in the autonomy of the local church. The only Head of a local church is the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1: 22-23). The church shall manage its own affairs and shall not be subject to any other religious body or organization. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for the service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture (1 Tim. 3:1-7).

11. We subscribe to the Doctrinal Statement adopted by the Luzon Convention of Southern Baptist Churches as our larger statement of faith.
GOVERNMENT
The government of Syzygus in Christ Church is vested in its members. The membership retains unto itself the right of exclusive self-government in all phases of its life and organization. It recognizes the needs of mutual counsel and cooperation that the common among evangelical churches. This church will cooperate and mutually work with Luzon Convention of Southern Baptist Churches and Cavite Network of Baptist Community as the church decides it upon.
NON-PROFIT STATUS and LIQUIDATION
This church is not organized for profit. In the event of liquidation or dissolution of the church, all of its assets and property of every nature and description whatsoever shall be paid over and transferred at the direction of the trustees to the

Luzon Convention of Southern Baptist Churches

AMENDMENT
This Constitution and Bylaws may be amended provided the proposed amendment shall have been presented in writing at a regular church business meeting at least 30 days before it is voted on. It must then be circulated to all the active membership 14 days before it is voted on. Amendments to this Constitution and Bylaws shall only be by two-thirds vote of the qualified members of the church who are present in the business meeting. There must be a quorum to discuss and vote on any amendment.
